Premiums and Spreads Explained

When buying gold, you pay more than the market price. This article explains why, and how EONA’s pricing and commission work.

A premium is the amount you pay above the market price of gold. It covers manufacturing, logistics, storage and other operating costs, plus the seller’s margin.

At EONA, prices are based on the international spot price plus a premium when you buy, and minus a discount when you sell, with a commission on each purchase and sale. See our Fees & Spread page.

What Drives Premiums in the Market?

Several factors influence premiums:

1. Bar Size
Smaller gold bars carry higher premiums per gram. A 1g bar may have a 10–20% premium, while a 1kg bar may be just 1–2%.
That’s because production, packaging, and handling costs are spread across fewer grams.

2. Supply & Demand
In times of high demand (e.g., during financial crises), premiums spike. Refiners, transporters, and vaults all face pressure, increasing costs.

3. Logistics and Insurance
Premiums also reflect transport, vaulting and physical handling costs.

4. Market Type
Retail buyers of coins can face premiums of 5–15% or more, sometimes including marketing markups and dealer margins.
At EONA, the commission is published in advance and the price is shown before you confirm (see our Fees & Spread page).

Why Costs Matter

The total cost of buying and selling — spread, commission and storage — affects what you get back when you sell. The higher the costs, the more the price must rise before you recover them.
Costs matter most over short holding periods or when prices fall. The value of gold can fall.

How EONA Prices

EONA publishes its pricing method: the international spot price plus a premium (buy) or minus a discount (sell), and a stated commission on each purchase and sale.
You see the price, commission and total before you confirm. Storage is charged separately at 0.50% per year for gold and 1.00% for silver, plus 5% VAT.
