The United Nations has called on countries to submit more ambitious climate plans this month, aiming to influence major economies like the EU and China before the upcoming U.N. climate summit. Nations are expected to provide their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by September, allowing for an assessment before the COP30 summit in November in Brazil.
Despite commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement, many countries have yet to update their NDCs, which should outline emission reduction strategies by 2035. U.N. climate chief Simon Stiell emphasized the importance of these plans, describing them as crucial to combating the global climate crisis.
China, the world's largest polluter, has indicated it will revise its target in the autumn. Meanwhile, the European Union faces internal disagreements, with countries like France and Poland requesting a delay in approving the bloc's 2040 climate goal, which would impact the 2035 target.
The U.N.'s evaluation will determine if nations are on track to limit global warming to safe levels or if further action is needed. This comes as the United States, historically the largest polluter, distances itself from climate efforts.
Last year marked the hottest year on record, with the past decade containing the ten hottest years. Climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather events, including storms, wildfires, and heatwaves.
